April 30, 1979 Dear Mr. Turnbow I have just received a letter from my sister and am forwarding the little information that she was able to supply I am afraid that it will not help you very much. Thank you for your interest in my father. Sincerely Henry H. Dunton Tuesday, April 24th Dear Mr Turnbow, Yesterday I received a letter from my brother Henry Dunton telling us of the part you and your associates are planning in Washington by your society. Am sorry that I can tell you so very little about the origin and early interest in my fathers hobby. I was a small girl, perhaps nine or ten years old, (now 80) when my mother was given two quilts by her sisterinlaw Mrs Thayer Hoguer of Parkersburg W. Va. They had been made by Mrs Haguers mother whose name I never knew. My uncle always called her "motherinlaw" and that is how we knew her. One of the quilts was pieced in small triangular shapes, sorry I can't recall the name of the pattern but it was as I remember not unusual. The second quilt was applique, the pattern a wreath of rather large red flowers with green foliage. The border of the quilt was the same. As I remember but am not sure the pieced quilt was made of yellow calico pieces. My father's work with the mentally ill was his lifes work and he felt that occuptional therapy was a most important form of treatment. Group therapy was not well known then I believe and his idea of having a group of ladies working on one project suggested the idea of quiltmaking. Am sorry that this is all I know- Perhaps if you get in touch with: Mrs Marshall Price 1121 Hollingsworth Road Tappa, Maryland 21085 She could help you. Mrs Price was an occupational therapist associated with my father for many years and am sure that she knows much more about his work with quilts than I do- Sorry that I can be of no greater help. Sincerely, Helen Dunton Furst PS. We are pleased that you are planning to honor our father and thank you. HDF |
