Description |
Cruise Quilt designed, pieced and quilted by Georgia Bonesteel. Predominant colors: white, pink, yellow, teal, black, red. The ship's hull is made from a brilliant abstract print from which the other colors are drawn. Techniques: machine piecing, raw edge applique, hand embroidery, hand quilting, machine quilting, reverse applique The center motif is a sailboat with 4 blocks making up the sails. Each sail exemplifies a technique; flowers made with raw edge applique, fish made from piecing and a sun made from needle turn applique and reverse applique. A pieced Mariner's Compass is in the upper proper right corner, with hand embroidered chain-stitched letters denoting the four directions. The abstract print used for the ship's hull is repeated in the pieced anchor and ship motifs in the border's corner blocks, as well as the binding for the four corners and the center of the Mariner's Compass. The wavy three-strip border is in yellow, teal and pink. Each side is divided into two halves, and the pink and teal are reversed in each half, while the yellow center strip is continuous. The back of the quilt is pieced of seven pieces of solid fabric in pink, two shades of yellow, two shades of teal and white, probably left-over fabrics from creating the front. The pieces have wavy edges. Each block was made by a different teacher on the cruise. The compass was made by Georgia Bonesteel. The sun was made by Helen Kelley. The other blocks were made by Virginia Avery, Karen Pervier and Doreen Speckman. The sun block has Helen Kelley's signature embroidered on it. Hand quilted dolphins in teal thread with embroidered eyes appear at each end of the boat. In the waves below the sailboat, the first names of participants on the cruise are machine quilted in teal thread. Along the lower border hand quilted dolphins swim among undulating hand quilted waves. The dolphins and waves continue around the other three sides. Sun rays are hand quilted in plain yellow and metallic gold thread, extending throughout that quadrant of the quilt. Clouds are hand quilted around the Mariner's Compass and below the sun. A three-part muslin sleeve is stitched to the back upper edge. |

Georgia Bonesteel commented in an email dated 7 August 2013 (see archives): "The cruise quilt was given in Helen Kelley's honor and represents another form of group quilting that became popular in the 20th Century." |
