Tulip Rug |
Description |
Tulip rug applique quilt. Medium blue urn with elegantly curved handles filled with tulips in peachy pink, lavender yellow and purple. Each tulip has a stem and leaf in green. The blocks are straight set with alternating plain blocks. The center three rows face toward the top, while the two side rows face toward the center line. The straight-edged border has two appliques on each side, each incorporating two tulips in pairs of the four colors, and two sets of leaves with stems. The border is mitered on the corners, bound in blue bias (possibly bias tape) that does not match the baskets. The quilting is paired hearts, small circles and outlining around the pattern blocks, feathered circles in the alternating blocks and a four lobed leafy shape placed where four blocks intersect. Border quilting is a diagonal grid. Only the diagonal quilting on the urns themselves cross any of the applique. The back is white. Hand appliqued, pieced and quilted. Very well constructed. The quilt is very thin. No hanging sleeve. Hand printed label on the back in ink on white muslin: "Pattern by Anne Orr 1931. Purchased in 2004 from Dorthea Ashton, Clearwater, Florida, who attests it was made by Mrs. Adams of Illinois. Repaired and owned by Jo Donaldson Goldman, Clearwater, Florida and Columbus, Ohio." |
