Description |
Nineteen piece Japanese hand-painted china tea service. The set includes seven plates, two saucers, a tea pot, creamer and sugar bowl, each with lids. three cups and a single coordinating but unmatched plate. The backs of all pieces except the lids, the cups, and the one similar plate are marked in green in a circle, ""Hand Painted Japan" in a ring surrounding three stars. a - Plate which does not match the remaining pieces of the set but coordinates with them. Center is dark red overlaid with gold chrysanthemums. The body of the plate is stripes and dots of various colors, orange, green, red, blue and yellow, heavily overlaid with gold. The rim has four concentric circles of colored splotches, alternating with hand-painted Asian faces in black on white. The outer edge is dark red overlaid with gold spirals. The back of the plate is marked in green, "Made in Japan." The ware is slightly greyish and there are several firing spots. 7" diameter. b through h - Seven plates, each with a dark red center overlaid with gilt in waves and Greek keys, surrounded by a bright blue ring, surrounded by stripes of black, yellow, green, red and blue, each overlaid with different patterns in gilding. This is surrounded by concentric rings in cream and dark red with hundreds of tiny Asian faces overlaid in gold. The outer rim is a circle of cherry blossoms outlined in dark red on cream, with a red and gold rim. 7" diameter. i and j - Two saucers that match the seven plates. 5.5" diameter. k and k1 - Sugar bowl with lid. Two gilded handles and a lid with a lip that fits down inside the bowl, and a finial of two gilded flowers back to back. Combined size: 5" high and 5.75" wide. l and l1 - Tea pot with lid. Similar finial, gilded handle and spout. Combined size: 7.5" high and 7.5" wide. m and m1 - Creamer with lid. Similar finial, handle and spout. Combined size: 4.75" high and 5.5" wide. n through p - Three tea cups, decorated inside and out. The inside of the cup substitutes cream for the blue in the striping and circle. All have gilded handles; none are marked on the back. Exhibit card stored with the set: "The tea set is an 1880 Japanese import. The pattern is called "The Thousand Faces." If you look closely on the gold and red stripes, especially when the light hits, you will be able to see little, tiny faces circling the design." |
