Description |
This is an all silk quilt. The central panel is a Chinese embroidery featuring 5 butterflies and densely packed embroidered blue flowers. This fragment has a quadruple border; 3 narrow stripes of blue then white then printed blue silk crepe followed by a wider grey blue silk crepe outer border. The piece is bound in the same light blue gray as the inner most border and backed with an ombre shaded pink and white silk. The central embroidery has cross hatch quilting with linear quilting in the 3 inner borders and a line of scallops quilted in the outer border. Quilting averages 6 stitches per inch in a pale blue thread through a medium back. On the back of the quilt is a hand written cloth label "Fragment of Chinese embroidery from a dress owned by Marie Webster, prepared by Bets Ramsey to honor Rosalind Perry who saved her grandmother's house. 2004" |
Provenance |
Bets Ramsey: "Rosalind Perry knew I liked to salvage old fabric pieces and when she found the Chinese (?) dress in one of Marie's dresser drawers she asked me if I could do something with it. I think Marie had some costume get-ups as you know from her photo in the hall, but I don't know how the dress fit into her life. Maybe Rosalind knows more about it. Thanks for reminding me about working on that project. It was fun." |
