Description |
Helen Kelley's label card, which came with the quilt, says: "6. Sun Francisco - "This quilt is an attempt to recreate the Victorian houses that line the hills of San Francisco, using only the techniques of piecing and careful fabric selection to represent the lacy curtains in the windows. The dyed sky represents the fog that swirls around these houses daily." The quilt shows three stylized Painted Ladies houses which front Alamo Square Park in San Francisco. The houses are created in batiks, border prints and all over prints in tones of pink, teal and beige. Each house has a raised foundation with a flight of steps leading to the front door. The sky behind the houses fog bank in front and outer border are a hand dyed misty blend of pink, teal and cream. The quilting defines the architectural features of houses such as windows, doors, and foundation. The sky is quilted in waving lines with a curling section of the upper proper right depicting clouds and more curvilinear in the lower proper left. There is a narrow inner border in a deep blue and purple batik. The outer border is quilted in a egg and dart pattern. The binding matches the outer border and mitered. Date embroidered in dark blue in the lower proper left corner: "1997". The quilt is machine pieced and hand quilted. The quilting is in white thread at about nine stitches per inch through a thin batt. The white muslin back is designed like a postcard. Helen Kelley's label card on the back says: "6. San Francisco - These Victorian houses are created with simple piecing and lacy printed fabrics. The dyed sky material represents the fog that swirls around the houses." Hand embroidered in dark blue chain stitch in the address position are three lines: "I left my heart in" "San Francisco" "Hellen Kelley". The stamp cancellation is the name, date and number of the quilt in a circle: "California May 1995 VI". This is done in dark gray stem stitch. The stamp is a printed fabric with depicting the Golden Gate Bridge in black against brush stroked sky of blue, green and purple with seven dark gray cancellation lines in stem stitch across the stamp. A white hanging sleeve is appliqued at the top edge. Two labels are applied near one end of the hanging sleeve: a printed Minnesota Quilt Project label, Documentation #HK09, and on the date line "023". Below it is a piece of gold fabric with pinked edges and the hand-written number "084", underlined. |
