Description |
Photo album with images from the 2009 display of 200 blocks, mounted on eight panels, which were donated by Cuesta Benberry from her collection. The exhibit was shown at the Carnegie Public Library in Marion, Indiana. |
Provenance |
The photographs show blocks from the collection of Cuesta Benberry who was an African-American quilt historian and researcher; she is an Honoree of the Quilters Hall of Fame. In addition to reminding us that African-American quilters were "always there" as part of quilt history, Cuesta developed an extensive collection to preserve as many quilt patterns as she was able. The collection numbers around 800 blocks. Besides gathering sample blocks from antique stores and other venues, Cuesta received blocks which were made for her as part of a Round Robin system among her friends. A Round Robin was a group of eight to ten persons interested in the designs and names of quilt patterns. A participant would mail a sample block to a friend, and that person could make a copy of the block and send the sample to the next person on the list. Some of the blocks in Cuesta's collection are original designs from the Round Robin participants, but most are traditional or published blocks. The block makers were: Annette Amann, St. Louis, MO; Deidre Amsden, London, England; Hazel Carter, Vienna, VA (TQHF founder); Shirley Conlon, San Diego, CA; Carol Crabb, Columbia. MO; Joy Craddock, Denison, TX; Edna Ford, Louisville, KY; Naomi Hamsher, Dansville, NY; MarySue Hannan, Washington, DC; Dolores Hinson, Austin, TX; Nancy Horvat; East St. Louis, IL; Mildred Kiser, Olive Hill, KY; Violet Lewis, Hammond, IN; Marie Matous, Grandview, MO; Wyrelene Mays, Columbus, OH; Lola Meyer, Moorland, IA; Lena Moses, Roanoke, VA; Frances Noack. St. Louis, MO; Clare Rose, London, England; Liz Rushing, Slidell, MO; Mary Schafer, Flushing, MI (a TQHF Honoree); Ruth Snyder, Independence, KS; Lilah Stone, Baraboo, WI; A. Strickland; and Marguerite Wiebusch, Russiaville, IN. |
