Description |
a) Spinning Spools designed, pieced and hand quilted by Georgia Bonesteel. Predominant colors: green, teal, yellow, purple, white. Techniques: machine pieced, hand quilted Center medallion of small spool blocks on point surrounded by sampler blocks. Small blocks are 4.25" x 4". Center medallion is 24" square, sampler blocks are 17.5". Bordered by 5.75" spool blocks. Border is 6", with 1/2" binding. 4" print sleeve on back. Selvage printed: "Georgia J Bonesteel Designs for Wamsutta." Backing is a white pin dot on teal green. Binding pieced from most of the fabrics used in the face of the quilt. Quilted at approximately 8 stitches per inch through a fairly puffy batt. Lower left hand corner of back: initials "GB" and date "1984" embroidered in white thread. Typed label on muslin stitched onto lower left hand corner of back: "Spinning Spools" Georgia J Bonesteel 100 Lowades Lane Flat Rock, NC 28731 (828-692-4061) b) The fabric picture frame is in yellow, blue, green and rose. The back is blue and the binding is brought back to front, hand stitched down. In the frame is muslin typed with the title SPINNING SPOOLS, January 1984--- May 1984, a description of the quilt, and Georgia's name at the bottom. |

Quilt was featured on the cover of "More Lap Quilting with Georgia Bonesteel", and the pattern for its creation is included in the book. Georgia's comments on this quilt in email dated 7 August 2013 (see archives): "The Spinning Spools quilt has to be one of my most cherished quilts. It was on the cover of More Lap Quilting--It is hand quilted and is lap quilted which I felt was a good addition to their collection. Today, many people are still lap quilting and it has lost the stigma of quilt as you go with people like Katie Pasquini Masopust doing it also." |
