Description |
Quilted, appliqued block, homespun linen background, 18th Century or very early 19th Century chintzes, some may even be 17th Century. Flowers and leaves in wreath form, bird sitting at bottom, ribbon at bottom, butterfly at right side. Signature at bottom right: "FLORENCE PETO 1959". Applique of a floral wreath cut in many parts of chintz and other fabrics with a bird and butterfly and a blue linen bow. The bird sits atop a large rose in the lower center. The wreath stems are olive changing to medium blue with appliqued flowers and leaves cut from a variety of chintzes and fabrics. Applique thread in general coordinates with the fabric being stitched. Quilting defines details in the bird's feathers and the flower petals, and forms a .75 inch grid across the background which is probably linen. Signature is stitched in olive stem stitches. |
Provenance |
Fabrics originally owned by Hewlett family of Long Island. Florence Peto bought the fabrics and stitched the block. Florence gave the block to Virginia Avery. Virginia donated the block to The Quilters Hall of Fame. Framed in a coral inner and beige outer mat in a dark wooden frame with gold leaf filet. Framed by Jean Easter. Framing completed 01/31/2013: 2 archival mats, wooden frame with gold trim, UV protective glass, glare free glass (Tru Vue Museum Glass). Florence Peto notes (on back of framed wall hanging): "Textiles in Picture "Most of the chintzes in this design are 18th Century or very early 19th. The blue-gray-green leaves, the curly ones, may even be 17th Century- the fabric from which they were cut being very old. The background homespun linen was cut from one of the sheets that had been made and used in the Hewlett family of Long Island. When I went to school in Jamaica, L.I., one of my friends and classmates was Edith Chapman; she married before I did- she married Dwight Hewlett. Shortly after the Hewlett property (a large estate) was sold and divided and the present town of Hewlett was named for the original owner. The linens had belonged to Dwight's grandmother and my old antiques-dealer friend, Abigail Stevenson, bought linen and other textiles from the sale. I bought two sheets. They were initialed and numbered, not dated. The bird in the design was cut from a chintz coverlet or comforter that also had belonged to the Hewlett estate. I have quite a large piece left; I would say its origin was English. The small prints may be later than the chintzes. "Florence Peto" in handwriting "... and shawls + chintzes from Abigail years ago. The XXXXX XXXX XXXX L.I. sales in those days. I loved the homespuns because I was fond of Edith and I was sure of their origin." |
