Description |
Fabric panel assembled in 2014 by Arnold Savage from fabrics in his collection. This panel is a white cotton sheet with fabric collections from two time periods. The upper half of the panel contains fourteen blocks comprising fabrics from the 1830s through the 1850s, in reds, pinks, browns, blue and green. This top half is labelled "1835 to 1840s." The lower half has twenty-nine fabrics from the 1870s, including a commemorative fabric from the 1876 Centennial in Philadelphia. This fabric alternates stripes of musical notes with stripes containing a shield with the word "Peace." The other fabrics are mostly small to medium prints in double pinks, reds, indigos and a few other colors. All samples are machine stitched in white thread using a large stitch. All samples are raw edge. Many of the fabrics on this panel are also found in the accompanying binder, #2014.019.009. Fabric labels are typed on separate pieces of cotton and stitched to the background. The top has a deep rod pocket that is integral to the backing. "Panel 2" and the initials "AHS" are written in felt tip pen on the upper back edges of the rod pocket. All sides have been machine hemmed. |
Provenance |
These fabrics were cut by Savage from his immense personal and family collection of historic fabrics, and constructed as panels specifically for the Quilters Hall of Fame. The blocks on this panel are from the collection of Gertrude Hegner Fisher, maternal great-great-grandmother of Arnold Savage. "This project is dedicated to all lovers of fine old fabrics, and especially to Barbara Brackman who has been my mentor since the 1980s, and who spent a wonderful afternoon at my home in Rose Township Ohio studying quilts and fabrics until darkness engulfed us. Arnold Hegy Savage July 2014" |
