Description |
Four part ensemble comprising a dress, belt, sleeveless tunic and portable machine cover. Rectangular quilted cover for Georgia Bonesteel's own Bernina sewing machine. Fabrics and colors are the same as the rest of the Have Machine Will Travel ensemble, indigo, red print, and multicolor batik on gold. The cover has a stylized sewing machine pieced in red on gold on each long side, and the corner of a log cabin style block showing a chevron effect on each end. The phrase "Have Machine Will Travel" is machine quilted in navy blue thread on the solid dark blue center triangle of each of these pieced blocks. The corners are striped fabric. The top has a finished slot for the machine's handle, and the base is finished with a dark blue polished cotton ruffle separated from the body by a line of metallic braid. The lining is the same black and white on red print as the dress's skirt and vest lining. It is currently mounted on a cardboard box with tape-wrapped handle, which is too small to support the cover properly. The box should be replaced by a property-sized acid free cardboard cube. |
Provenance |
Email correspondence from Georgia Bonesteel in 2015: "An ensemble complete with quilted cover case for my Bernina. The dress is based on antique blocks worked around colorful batik fabric. A loose decorative apron accents the full skirt which is all tied together with a cinch quilted belt. The tinker's sleeveless coat opens to reveal notions and necessary items for quilt making. Quilted on the entire surface of the long vest are the words, "Have Machine, Will Travel." |
