Description |
"Iris in Baskets" quilt: The quilt is constructed of 16 approximately 14 x16 inch blocks with an image of an open-work lavender pot (constructed in reverse applique with four diagonal slashes in the lavender fabric), two open irises, an iris bud and three leaves.The baskets and iris are in a lighter shade of lavender with the center standard in the darker shade of lavender. The border has 8 appliqued iris in the darker shade of lavender and the center standard in the lighter shade. The corner iris on the border are in the lighter & the center standard in the darker shade. The stems, leaves and border vine are all the same green, the buds in the baskets are in the darker shade of lavender. There is a border of twining vine with flowers and leaves, approximately 7.5 inches with a 3/4 inch outer border in the lighter of the two lavenders. The 1/4 inch applied binding is in the darker lavender. The background has diagonal line quilting, and there are feathered wreaths at the nine internal intersections where four blocks come together The lavender outer border has double half circles. All quilted in white thread. The quilting is even and of good quality- about 10 stitches to the inch- the applique is also well done at about 8 stitches to the inch. |

The donor has provided a letter explaining that the quilt was made by her grandmother, Selma Bader Denton, who was a resident of Marion IN and knew Marie D. Webster. She also donated a newspaper clipping of the maker's marriage notice and a photo of the maker. |
