Sampler quilt of 49 blocks, size approximately 9" each, set seven by seven, with a 3.25" pieced border comprised of 3" nine patch blocks on point in an array of fabrics on a light orange print background. Narrow straight grain applied binding of the same orange fabric. Hand pieced and hand quilted in parallel lines through the blocks 1" apart; the stitching alternates direction from block to block. The blocks are in a variety of fabrics and designs with no overall pattern or order to the layout. Many of the blocks are inscribed: "Canada" in red embroidery "Mrs. Amy E. [illegible] Trenton Ohio" in ink "J. E. Baker Bristol NC" in red embroidery "S. A. Houston.", "Calloway Co. Mo.", "March 19th", and "1887.", all in red embroidery in the four corners of a red and white block "A. D. G. V. S." and "N. Y" on two lines in red embroidery "[illegible] Ind" in ink There are also numerous faded and illegible inked inscriptions. The backing is white cotton sateen. A typed label with the name Donna Wilder and her address is in the lower proper left corner. A second label, "Wilder 12", is in the upper proper right corner. The back has a muslin hanging sleeve. |

This quilt was one of 29 additional quilts recognized by the judges following their selection of the "Twentieth Century Best Quilts". Georgia Bonesteel chose this quilt as her Judge's Choice, and said: "Sampler quilts have become the epitome of beginner quiltmaking. They are the stepping stones toward patchwork and applique exploration. Teacher have used these quilts as the springboard for lessons and a medium for introducing the world of quiltmaking." The quilt was donated from the collection of Donna Wilder. Donna purchased the quilt in 1988 at the Vermont Quilt Festival. |
