Pink Dogwood in Baskets |
Description |
One of a pair of vintage pink dogwood with baskets quilt tops, with flowers in two shades of strong pink with light green centers and dark green leaves and purple baskets on a background of light Nile green. The flowers, leaves and baskets are all hand appliqued. These matching tops were quilted differently by two different quilters and exhibited in Mary Kerr's traveling exhibit, "Quilt as Desired." Cathy Franks machine quilted this top in 2014 using a deep green thread. Franks used a wide variety of quilting motifs in finishing this quilt. The plain green center has an eight-lobed shape with six different quilting designs in the petals and surrounding areas. The baskets are filled with concentric curves. The flowers have multiple layers of outline quilting and a series of large classical oval shapes is quilted in the space between the two rectangles of dogwoods. Lines in the flower petals and veins in the leaves are also quilted. Selvedge printing appears on a seam line that joins the center field to the border, beginning 24" from the upper proper right corner: "SHERMAN [....] POINTER". The scalloped edge is bound in a pink bias plain weave fabric. The backing is two shades of pink; a vivid tone-on-tone print in the center field and a lighter plain fabric around all four borders, matching the binding. A pink hanging sleeve is attached to the back. Labels on the two lower back corners are iron-on white fabric. The first label, printed on the fabric, says: Quilt as Desired Separated at Birth #1 applique dogwood top c 1927 Quilter: Cathy Franks Carmel, Indiana www.cathyfranks.com The second label, handwritten in ink, says: Quilt as Desired Curated by Mary Kerr www.marywkerr.com [phone number] |
